Diamond Open Access is a model of scholarly publishing in which neither authors nor readers pay for publishing or accessing research results. Instead, the costs are covered by universities, research institutions, libraries, or public consortia, ensuring that scientific knowledge remains a public good rather than a commercial product.
Unlike commercial publishing models based on subscriptions or Article Processing Charges (APCs), Diamond OA removes financial barriers that often prevent researchers – especially from smaller institutions or less wealthy countries – from sharing their work openly. It supports bibliodiversity, multilingualism, and academic integrity, giving equal opportunities to all disciplines, languages, and communities.
This community-driven approach is built on collaboration, transparency, and long-term sustainability. It strengthens the role of academic publishers and service providers as part of the research infrastructure rather than as commercial intermediaries. By aligning with the principles of Open Science and FAIR data, Diamond OA ensures that both publications and research data are openly available, reusable, and beneficial to society as a whole.
