Opportunities and Challenges of Open Science in the Czech Republic
The Open Science Working Group of the Czech Association of Academic Libraries (AKVŠ ČR) has published the position paper Příležitosti a výzvy otevřené vědy v České republice (Czech only), which maps the current state of open science and outlines pathways for its further development within the Czech research landscape. The document presents open science as an integral part of modern, responsible research practice and highlights a number of persistent challenges, including insufficient coordination, a lack of systemic support, and an unclear legislative and funding framework.
The Czech National Centre for Diamond Open Access welcomes this initiative and appreciates the reference to diamond open access in the chapter on alternative publishing models and strengthening the role of authors and institutions. In our view, the document accurately captures the current state of open science in the Czech Republic while also demonstrating that many individuals and institutions are already actively contributing to its advancement.
Together with the authors, we emphasize that further progress in open science will require stronger national coordination, clearly defined objectives, and the development of a long-term national open science strategy. Open science is not merely a formal requirement in grant reporting; it reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that research serves society and remains a public good.
